Kauai – the Garden Island

Kauai, the furthest of the Hawaiian islands, is often called “the garden island.” And, no wonder. With it’s lush greenery, tropical rainforests and spectacular waterfalls, Kauai is a place that will truly take your breath away.

A trip to the garden island is certainly not complete with visiting the National Tropical Garden, located in Lawai. The long, narrow garden covers just under square miles, and stretches from Lawai to the Pacific. Contained within the garden are about 800 varieties of palm and 60 types of banana plants, countless tropical flowers and huge water lilies.

Another must-see spot on Kauai is Waimea Canyon, described by Mark Twain as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Waimea Canyon is ten miles long and about 3,600 feet deep. The last time I visited Waimea Canyon the entire area was shrouded in fog, which is common. So, if you want to ensure yourself of a spectacular view, be sure to call ahead for weather information. The number for weather info is: 808-245-6001.

Of course, a visit to Kauai isn’t complete without taking in the 50 miles of white sand beaches which surround this small island. Starting with the North Shore, a few beaches of note include Lumahai Beach, which served as the backdrop for the movie “South Pacific.” The surf here can be dangerous, but the surroundings make a spectacular setting for weddings or commitment ceremonies. There’s also Tunnels Beach, known for its wonderful windsurfing, and Hanalei Bay, a semicircular bay, which is the larges on Kauai. Hanalei Bay is considered the finest beach in the islands.

Moving along to the east side of the island, you’ll find Kealia Beach and Wailua Beach, both considered excellent for bodyboarding and surfing. Kalapaki Beach is located south of Kealia and Wailua Beaches, and is one of Kauai’s most popular beaches.

Along the South Shore you’ll find Keoneloa Beach, a major windsurfing beach. Poipu County Beach Park is the South Shore’s most popular beach, with a sheltered swimming area. If snorkeling is your sport of choice, then you must head out to Poipu Beach.

Another good snorkeling area along the South Shore is Waiohai Beach, which is also a good swimming area.

The West Shore boasts Kauai’s most famous surfing beach, Pakala Beach. But, beware, shark sightings are common. One of the widest beaches is Polihale State Park. You get to Polihale State Park after driving a 5-mile unpaved road. For that reason, this beach can be uncrowded. The time I visited I felt like I had the beach to myself. A great place to watch the sunset.

If you wish a truly memorable Hawaiian vacation, then put Kauai at the top of your list. It certainly deserves it.

Hello from Toronto: The City Viewed Through the Eyes of First-Time Visitors

So my brother is in town, together with his wife and 2 friends from my little home town in Austria. It is everybody’s first time in North America and their initiation to Toronto. Just to give you ideas of dimensions: Austria has a population of about 9 million and the country extends about 900 km from east to west while the Greater Toronto area nowadays probably has about 4 to 5 million people and Lake Ontario alone is over 300 km long. The first thing my visitors noticed was the difference in size: the size of the city, the size of the lake, the size of cars, the size of supermarkets, and even of refrigerators.

On Sunday we started off with a little driving tour of Toronto where I first took my visitors down to the lakefront by the historic Art Deco style R.C. Filtration Plant. All of them love water and to have a lake as big as an ocean so close by fascinated them. After a leisurely drive on Queen Street through the quaint Beaches neighbourhood we parked the car close to the St. Lawrence Market and started our walk around.

Since my brother is a chef and always loves to purchase market-fresh food, I initially took him to the St. Lawrence Market which always has an antique sale on Sunday. The food market is actually closed on Sunday. We checked out the wares from old furniture to cameras to various knick-knacks.

Our exploration continued westwards along Front Street past historic 19th century houses and of course past the famous triangular-shaped Flatiron Building which has a mural on its west side. Approaching Yonge Street we walked past the Hockey Hall of Fame, a historic Beaux-Arts former bank building, the magnificent Royal York Hotel, built in 1929, once the largest hotel in the British Commonwealth.

One of the things that fascinated my visitors most was how old and new can coexist right next to each other: shiny skyscrapers are located right beside historic sandstone churches. Our walking tour continued past Union Station, Toronto’s impressive central railway station, built between 1914 and 1927 as a joint construction project by the Canadian Pacific Railway and Grand Trunk Railway (now the Canadian National Railway). Its monumental scale, classical detail and rational, ordered planning were hallmarks of the style. The station is massive and takes up an entire block on Front Street between York Street and Bay Street. The Great Hall of the Station is 250 ft. long and 84 ft. wide.

Our walk continued further west on Front Street past the Convention Centre to the base of the CN Tower and the entrance to the Skydome, Toronto’s multi-purpose stadium with a retractable roof, now called the Rogers Centre. We then snaked our way up through the Entertainment District to Queen Street where we admired Osgoode Hall, built in the 1830s, and now an oasis of green in the city. An ornate iron fence, built in 1867, renowned for its peculiar “cow gates,” surrounds the property and its beautiful gardens. The cow gates in particular fascinated my visitors.

Our next stop was at New City Hall and Old City Hall, opened in 1899, which racked up construction costs of more than $2.5 million at the time which caused great controversy in those days. Continuing past the Bay Department Store on Queen we passed the Metropolitan United Church, an English style cathedral dating from 1872, whose churchyard was filled with people enjoying the warm day.

Once back in the car we drove through the U of T campus, my Alma Mater and we stopped briefly to check out Hart House and Kings College. Then we headed down to Chinatown at Spadina and Dundas and my visitors marvelled at this exotic, busy market area. Our last stop on the tour was Kensington Market, a lively little neighbourhood full of food and clothing stories and restaurants where we ended up picking up fresh vegetables, dry beans, and a variety of cheeses for some of the scrumptious meals to come. My brother, the chef, marvelled at the variety of food avialable here, combined with the inexpensive prices a food lover’s dream.

We took our loot home where my husband was waiting for us with a big brunch to strengthen ourselves for attending a birthday party of one of my friends that had the motto of “let out your inner child”. The party was unique in that it involved such time-honoured Toronto traditions as hitting a piada while a bunch of adults were playing with water guns, chasing one another around the house with buckets of water dropping on the combatants from the second floor.

I think our visitors had a full day, from getting a first taste of Toronto, to participating in a rather eventful birthday party, their first impressions were very positive and they were looking forward to exploring more of this exciting city.

Bryan Ellis on Virtual Real Estate Investing

Virtual Real Estate Investing” is a relatively new concept. What is meant by “Virtual Real Estate Investing” ranges from online games like SecondLife (where real profit can be made) to the use of internet technologies to make normal real estate investors more profitable.

In order to figure out the truth of the matter, I sought out Bryan Ellis, whose experience in the fledgling industry is truly impressive.

“I began using the term ‘virtual real estate investing’ in the late 1990’s when I realized the clear similiarities in profit strategies, regardless of whether the “real estate” is “virtual” or “physical” said Ellis.

Bryan Ellis cites the similar strategies one can employe to make money from “virtual property” and “physical property” as a primary parallel of the two markets. “These types of assets – websites and physical real estate – can be monetized in very similar ways like buy lo/sell high, leasing/rental and advertising opportunities” he says.

The parallels really are obvious. Consider: A valuable piece of real estate is valuable largely due to the interest that other people have in that specific location. Similarly, ownership of a desirable domain name is valuable for the same reasons. Regardless of the type of asset, you can sell or lease or use any number of strategies to turn the assets into cash.

In our next installment of this series on virtual real estate investing., Bryan Ellis will share the internet analogies to the physical concept of real estate development.

money gambling

Assuming you don’t comprehend gaming establishment wagering, read on.

Most commonly a casino is a structure that presents games of luck. Patrons are expected to take a risk handling the slot-machines or alternate games of luck. Gaming establishment games by and large include mathematically determined chances built in which promise the gambling organization preserves a lead against the gamesters.

A lot of betting establishment games may cause you to get addicted very swiftly. Let’s reflect on the infamous one-armed-bandit, a coin operated contraption with 3 or more cylinders that revolve when a crank hitched to it is pulled. This appliance commonly will spill winnings based on a sequence of motifs seen on the front panel of the machine. Sadly, gaming establishment games put forward an apparition of being in full control, effectively deluding the gaming devotee: the addressee is given over choices, but in actual fact these can never truly match up the patron’s long-term negative odds. That is induced by the gaming establishment never paying up the full stake as hoped for. This structured arrangement is repeatedly noticeable in acclaimed casino games such as Texas hold’em poker, craps, roulette or blackjack.

Seven-card stud is indeed a very trendy casino game. The gambling buffs, playing with obscured hands, will bet in a principal pot which is awarded to the winning gamer bearing the winning hand. (Obviously, the coolest bluffer can easily win)

Similar to Texas hold’em poker, blackjack is likewise a highly popular casino game. A substantial chunk of its notoriety is thanks to the mix of chance and skill and choice making, not to mention a procedure titled Card Counting. This is a craft by which customers may actually skew the winning odds of the game for their own good by both betting and tactical decisions in agreement with the hands shown.

“Craps” is yet another well-known pastime where punters try to predict the throw of two dice. Gamesters may place the stakes on the score of one spin, or on a string of cycles on two dice. Contrary to blackjack, there isn’t any easily available long term killer tactics players could put to use to improve the odds.

Roulette is an eminently popular casino game – a croupier rotates a roulette wheel that holds exactly 37 (classical roulette) or precisely thirtyeight (applies to Vegas roulette) differently marked pockets in which a white ball will finally settle, which signifies the winner Supposing that the player wagers on any given number which makes it, which is to say they are actually having a streak of luck, the promised accolade is 35 to 1, the original stake proper is paid out. Consequently in totality the wager itself is increased by thirty-six.

Attempt to be very much alert for all that as these gaming room games of luck may well be highly addictive. So many lives have been demolished due to inordinate gambling and albeit it may be a lot of fun, seek to restrain your wagers.

dark edge of my soul

In life, we truly walk a fine line Like a mobius loop we cannot define Finite from infinite, sane from insane And sometimes darkness from light. A reflection of innocence, long since gone Hope into hopelessness, it seems As I face the world in a reality Gone mad, turned upside down. I waken slowly from my dreams Only to find nothing has changed Who is that person in the mirror? I see the image of someone deranged. The light edge of reason quickly fades Shadows advance, closing swiftly in With anguished cries I strike out In denial, against a tortured reflection. Shards of shattered trust betrayed Splinter within my soul Falling into the empty void there now Which once was a heart that was whole. Tears, stinging like acid rain Blur visions of a future now gone Looking down I see a blossoming stain Its color, blood red, running strong. For every face of light I show I hide a face of darkness A facade of normalcy? I don’t know Turning inward, I embrace the cold. Reveling in it, not always revealing To others who would then know my pain That when the shadows rule my mind, All light is banished, at least, for a time.

The Life Of Luxury In Dubai

The United Arab Emirates are a prime tourist destination because they stand out as a remarkable example of how petrodollars can be used to improve the lives of Arabs. In contrast to the poverty for which so much of Arabia is renowned, Dubai features skyscrapers and futuristic amusement parks. Modern Dubai is the product of 20 years of intensive planned development; prior to this, it was a small fishing port of little importance.

The United Arab Emirates, or UAE, is 32,000 square mile political union of seven sheikhdoms, formed when the British left the Gulf region in 1971. The total area of Dubai is approximately 1000 square miles, and it is the second largest emirate in the UAE, after Abu Dhabi. In addition to a federal president and prime minister, each emirate has a separate ruler who oversees the local government. Dubai, a small fishing settlement, was taken over around 1830 by a group of Bani Yas tribesmen from the Liwa oasis, led by the Maktoum family which still rules the tiny nation today. For most of its history, main economic activities were agriculture, fishing and pearl production.

The ruling clan of Dubai was exceptionally progressive, and did their best to make their tiny nation attractive to traders from nations including India and Persia. These businessmen settled in the growing city of Dubai and made it a leading entry port for trade goods. In 1971, the independent emirate joined with the other small sheikhdoms of Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and, in 1972, Ras Al Khaimah to create the federation of United Arab Emirates.

The discovery of oil in 1966 transformed the region by providing funds for the development of a modern, western infrastructure. The Maktoum family, unlike many middle eastern rulers who hoard oil wealth for their private use alone, ensured that the oil revenue was deployed in national development. Much of the modernization is due to the efforts of Sheikh Rasid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, who ruled from 1958 to 1990.

Well informed of the risks of oil-dependency, Sheikh Rashid actively promoted industrial ventures to build his nation’s infrastructure. The Aluminium and Cement factory are the result of this endeavour. He also establised the Jebel Ali Free Trade Zone, the fifth largest free trade zone in the world. Within 10 years of its inception, it attracted over 900 international companies that include global giants such as General Motors, AEG, Aiwa, BP, Ciba, Geigy, Daewoo and Heinz.

Dubai is appealing to tourists as well as business executives. Like the rest of the U.A.E., it has also been actively promoting itself as a vacation destination. In June 1996 World Travel prizes ceremony held in Las Vegas, USA, it won the gold prize for the best destination in the Middle East.

Dubai features the annual Dubai Shopping Festival, the Dubai World Trade Center which hosts innumerable international events and fairs, the Dubai Air Show, the Dubai Summer Surprises, the world’s tallest skyscraper, an undersea hotel and even indoor alpine skiing at the Ski Dubai Dome.

The Dubai International Airport is reputed to be the world’s second best transit airport. It currently handles 7.3 million passengers per year with a growth rate of 12% that is double that of any other airport in the world. The emirates, which will begin receiving Airbus A380 superjumbos starting April 2007, will hire 8,000 new staff members as cabin crew for its rapidly expanding air fleet. It is investing $20 million to expand its crew training facility at the Emirates Training Center in Garhoud.

Prevent a Fire in Your Home This Christmas

If you have decided to keep a live tree in house always, remember that special fire safety precautions need to be taken. Real trees can pose a serious fire hazard, especially if the tree becomes dry.

It only takes a matter of seconds for a Christmas tree to catch on fire; it spreads rapidly and is almost impossible to put out.

When selecting a tree, try to select a fresh tree. Look for one that is a healthy green color and have minimal browning needles, the needles should be flexible and should be hard to pull off. Run your hands through the needles, and see if they easily fall off. Pick the tree up and tap the butt on the ground a few times, notice how many needles fall off the tree. It’s expected that some brown needles will fall off, but if you notice more then a few of the green needles falling off, the tree has already begun to dry out and it’s best to select a different tree.

Once you get the tree home, you want to cut about a quarter inch to an inch off the truck of the tree. If this was already done at the lot when you bought the tree, you do not need to do it again. If you don’t put the tree up right away, you might want to cut another quarter inch of the truck. This helps the tree absorb water.

Always trim the butt of the tree straight across, do not cut at an angle as this decreases the tree’s ability to absorb water. To keep your trees freshness, provide adequate supply of clean water every day. There is no need to use any commercial preservatives, sugar, aspirin or bleach; none of these have been proven to work.

Check the water level every day and clean the tree stand to improve the tree’s water intake.

Keep your tree at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, furnaces and other heat sources. It’s also a good idea to make sure the tree does not block doorways or high traffic areas. Always unplug all lights before going to sleep or leaving the home.

The biggest thing to remember with live Christmas trees is that well-watered Christmas tress do not represent a fire hazard. Threes that are dried out do. When Christmas is over or the tree starts to drop needles, properly dispose of it right away.
