How to Deal With Difficult People or, How to Not Go Mad During the Holidays

Man, haven’t we all had to deal with some real wack-jobs out there? What? They’re in your living room, and you just escaped to your only true friend, your computer, for a little solace? I know where you’re comin’ from, Baby. Been there, don’t plan to go back.

However, when the Holidays hit, it’s next to impossible not to have to come face-to-face with one of your biggest nightmares… or in some families, an entire flock of them. Oooh, and they can be some seriously ugly birds, too.

Here are some of my ‘Tried & True’ methods I use to cope, and the best method I’ve ever come across. It even helped my marriage, since, frankly, my spouse is often my biggest irritant, and I can’t seem to shake him off, as Mariah suggests (I think she’s talking directly to me in that song — how she knows I’m in the car at that particular time is a mystery to me…).

1. Avoidance. Works for me. I try to stay as far away from the ‘Social Irritant’ as possible. Another Country is great, but if not that, another State, a different Town, other side of the Kitchen Island if it’s too late and they’re already in your home. It’s much more difficult to manage this clever Avoidance technique if you’re stuck at their house, in which case, I suggest you move on to Number 2. And don’t agree to go and stay in the Lion’s Den, again — a Cheap Motel is a better option!

2. Drink. And lots of it. Numb away the pain, I says. Shays. Shay, did I ever tell you that old joke about the… oh, wait. You’re still in need of some help, and so I pass you another glass… Now here’s the sad part — I really did have to do this with a particular set of In-Laws (I’ve had more than one set, if you can believe that! ha,ha,ha! That’s just for my own amusement…!), in preparation for them coming over. Thankfully, they were very distant, so I rarely had to see them, and it was my Mother-in-Law who was the most difficult one. I would put on the coffee early, get out the Baileys, and Voila! Therapy in motion. And it totally helped, too, since I laughed more and cried less… a good thing. Or at least, a slightly better thing.

3. Pretend. Oh, I used to pretend all sorts of things, just to maintain my own sanity. Can’t remember the baby’s name and you only have three Grandchildren? No problem. Why would a complete stranger know our sweet little baby’s name, anyway? That doesn’t even make sense… sob, sob, gulp, gulp… shure, I’ll have more wine. Just pretend your day away. Are you in Hawaii on the Beach? On a Date with someone with a much better Family?? (That’s a popular dream, I hear…) Anything you can imagine that will create a little emotional distance might work. Don’t forget that drink! (Man, what would a Recovering Alcoholic do? Maybe remember the old days for a bit, and continue on to more ‘functional’ methods below…)

4. Read a Good Book. Pornography might be a good choice if you’re still trying for that ‘avoidance’ thing, since folks will take one look and assume the worst… don’t you hate that? Judgemental Bashtards. (I have to assume you went with Tip # 2, and now your own level of judgement is slightly impaired…) No, no. The bestest book I’ve ever read that truly helped me deal with Difficult People was (is) The Four Agreements, by don Miguel Ruiz. . Thank God I found that book before I went mad. It’s hard to find a good book at the Loony-Bin… or so I’ve heard…

In case you’re reading this and it’s an emergency situation, and you can order the book, but it won’t be here until Monday, and you don’t know if you can last that long, here’s what I took out of that book — It’s not about you, it’s all about them. Yep. You’ve probably heard that before, but get this — it’s true! Everybody has their own view of their own life, but they also have a view of YOUR life. They actually think they can tell you what to do, criticize you for who you are, what you want to be, how you like to dress or how long your hair is … okay, that’s my own family, but you might have a similar one, no?? ha,ha! Oh, great, now we’re back to Tasty Method # 2…

So here’s the deal. Who cares what they think or say about you? Who the hell cares. (Now you’re an angry drunk…) You know who you are, and you know your Dreams are critical to your own success. Forget about the nay-sayers. I always think it’s funny when someone says how supportive their family was all along — it’s been most peoples’ experience that the family only begins to support you once you’ve reached the pinnacle of your success, and not a moment sooner. (Now who’s the cynic?)

The really, really hard part is when this stuff involves your children. That’s hard to deal with, because they’re too young to be able to truly understand that mean words from an oldies mouth are from their own bitterness, and not because of the child. (And ‘youngens’ can be mean, too, so don’t attach an age to a possible ‘meannie’!) Tough to get that message across. Your only hope, there, is to ‘tell it like it is’ with your child, and give them all your love. They might have to learn early that not all people are nice, and not all the people are in your corner. (Where you are huddling in a small heap, right now… come on out. No need to hide anymore. Read the book and you’ll be able to put it all into perspective. You’ll love your new sense of Personal Freedom you get from one quick and easy read.)

Oh, and here’s the thing — you can still love someone who is less than kind to you. Often, you already do. I don’t quite get the ‘love’ part of an In-Law story, though, since they’re not a part of your Family, but if you plan to stay married, it’s good to work out a deal in your own head where you can survive a Holiday Meal (or, God Forbid, a whole Vacation… in the same house… did I mention you can buy Booze by the Case? Yep. You might want to check into that…).

One thing I feel very strongly about when it comes to getting along with your Spouse’s Family: If it’s your Mother-in-Law or Father-in-Law who is giving you all sorts of grief, it’s NOT your problem to sort out, as many wives have heard over the years. (Or husbands, depending on the relationship his wife has with her family. It’s been my experience, though, that a woman is really good at defending her own family — not so much herself, but really good at defending her children and husband from intruders. The same often can’t be said for some husbands who want to pretend that everything is great, and nothing is happening. Nothing is happening. Nothing is happening. It’s like a little ‘husband mantra’! ha,ha,ha!)

The only person who can deal head-on with their own parents, or any other part of their own family is the one who is related by blood.Or a very, very long connection with said annoying family members…Nothing else will work, since you’re the imported one. (Sounds like ‘imported wine’, and that brings us full circle back to glorious method # 2…) If they won’t help you manage the difficult situation, try to make you deal with it, instead, or don’t believe you when you cry all the way home that something terrible went down the second they left the room, and you were sitting there, desperately trying to mind your own business, when all hell broke loose (Oh, man. It happens like that, don’t I know it), then just refuse to get into that situation, again. Make it a ‘No-Go Zone’. If they want you to go, they have to help. If not, yippee! You’ve got the whole day to yourself!

Hey, you know what would be fun and would help you to get through (or over) all the crap that happens to you over the Holidays? Let’s add your Painful Moments to my Site! We’ll laugh, we’ll cry … we’ll all commiserate. Then we’ll all feel better to see that everybody on the planet has to deal with difficult, craaazy folks, so we might as well make fun of them, right? Come on! It’ll be fun! Send in your stories — not too graphic, please — I’m just kidding about that ‘porno’ thing! Watch for language, too, although I’m totally okay with you mumbling under your breath while you write about your story! That’s normal, anyway, ain’t it? Remember to put in a Subject Heading so I’ll open the email — you might be surprised at some of the crazy folk who sometimes write to me… ha,ha,ha! No, they’re my friends. I happen to like a person with a touch of crazy. They’re funnier. They’ve figured out how to cope with difficult people with humor, which brings us back to making fun of any difficult situation. (Oh, and that’s the ‘Good Crazy’, not the ‘Aaah, You’re a Nut – Crazy’)

Actually, just thought of something… lately, since I read The Four Agreements, when someone says something crazy to me, or treats me in a bizarre way (there’s a girl at the gym who appears to hate me — whatever… I just laugh to myself and move on to the next piece of Equipment, where I lift massive amounts of weight to relieve my stress… uh, oh. Well, it’s better than Crack, I say, so not to worry. ‘Hooked on Lifting’ oughtta be okay…)… Anyway, I go straight to the thought of what their perception of me is, and how I know it couldn’t be further from the Truth. I know Me, so I just let everything slide right past me, now. Very effective. My husband hardly even annoys me, now, too, which is a miracle in and of itself! He used to drive me around the bend, but now I just look at him with relative detachment, and think, “Man, what a nut.” Then I move on. Problem solved. Of course, I also put the House on the Market, so maybe the problem isn’t completely solved, but I’m workin’ on it!

Well, Good Luck with your tricky situation. Do drop me a line and tell us all about your terrible day, though — maybe we can help. Take the burden off a little. (Did you just hear they were pouring Bourbon? Me, too — gotta go see!)

Happy Holidays, My Pretty’s. Pretties. Ptri-T’s. Ugh, who can spell after all that booze?

  • Debt Advice and Help

    Debt advice and help

The New Year is nearly here and it got me thinking about the likely increase in numbers of regular folk needing help with personal finance issues. I’m thinking debt advice and debt help services here in particular . . . I imagine that many consumers will have over spent in the Christmas period and that a few will wake up with a bit of a financial hangover.

I put together a quick list of useful debt advice resources where where you will be able to find lots of useful debt advice on personal debt and debt management issues. Please note that I’m not endorsing any of these debt advice resources . . . they’re just a list of useful websites I found when researching debt advice myself.

The sites are a mix of commercial, not-for profit and informational resources offering a wide range of help and debt advice with debt management, including debt management plans, free debt management plans and general personal finance advice.

As ever, I’d suggest you use your own judgement when using this debt advice resource list:

PS: from what I understand, the majority of debt advice comes for free from charities & Government bodies. It also appears that a number of debt advice companies will also offer free debt advice in the first instance . . . after that, their advice comes as part of a fee charging service:

    Hawaii Arts Season

Hula, danced beachside while tiki torches are lit by an athletic Hawaiian boy and a tenor sings Lovely Hula Hands at sunset. Galleries filled with carved tiki figures and predictable watercolor paintings of reef fish or plumeria blossoms. Think this is all you can expect from the arts in Hawaii? If so, you have a real treat in store. What Honolulu and the other islands have to offer is a thriving, exciting, and diverse arts community. There is something for everyone and many things that are totally unexpected.

The inaugural “Hawaii Arts Season” has been set for February 27 to May 2, 2004. But, in reality the “arts season” in the islands is year round. The 2004 “Season,” supported by the Hawaii Tourism Authority and promoted by the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, is a tenweek period packed with a diverse selection of art and cultural events. The goal is to etch Hawaii Opera Theatre, the Honolulu Symphony, world-class art museums, multi-ethnic cultural festivals, Broadway-quality productions, internationally acclaimed film festivals, and the many hidden gems firmly into the minds of lovers of the arts. Sun, sand, surf in Hawaii are the best. Add the arts and you have a truly cosmopolitan destination.

    Performing Arts

As Diamond Head Theatre heads into its 90th year of continuous operation (Swing!), Army Community Theater (Kiss Me Kate) has another great season, and Manoa Valley Theater (Copacabana) also continues sold out shows, it is a sure bet that you can catch great musicals, comedies and drama on one Honolulu stage or another, any weekend. The lure of warmth and sunshine brings many Broadway performers and directors to do shows in the islands. Other theater companies, like Honolulu Theater For Youth, The Actors Group at the Yellow Brick Studio and TShirt Theatre, produce high quality, innovative, original and traditional shows. In addition to the regular theater locations, productions are frequently offered in art galleries and museums, college stages, churches, schools and even outdoor street venues. A do not-miss is The Arts at Marks Garage, right in the heart of Honolulu China Town, where performance art and fine art are a regular combination. The 40-page TGIF section of the Friday newspaper has complete listings for all shows, including numerous free public performances. Each neighbor island has one or more theater companies.

The “official” Arts Season opens, February 27, with the Hawaii Opera Theatre’s “Merry Widow.” In March the Honolulu Symphonys Masters Series hosts master flutist Sir James Galway. In April, at the Polynesian Cultural Center Amphitheater, audiences will be enthralled by the Whakataetae Maori Song and Dance Competition. On May First, “Lei Day” in the islands, the Waikiki Shell blossoms with the annual lei making competition and the 25th-plus year performance of the Brothers Cazimero classic Hawaiian music concert.

Every Sunday, at 2 p.m. Na Mea Hawaii at Ward Warehouse offers a showcase of traditional and contemporary Hawaiian entertainers in a free concert. Another great spot for entertaiment are the Sunday concerts at the Kapiolani Park Bandstand at the base of Diamond Head in Waikiki. The hundred-plus year old Royal Hawaiian Band plays and hula groups dance, often ollowed by a variety of multiethnic cultural performances.

With exceptional performance venues like the Waikiki Shell, the Neal Blaisdell Concert Hall, the historic Hawaii Theatre in Honolulu, and the Maui Arts and Cultural Center available, the entire state hosts productions by some of the worlds best performing arts companies and performers. Grammy Award-winning classical guitarist Sharon Isbin, the African world music legend Baaba Maal, the Colorado String Quartet, Les Ballet Jazz de Montreal, and the CHI Chinese Circus are on the calendar for spring of 2004.

Russian Romance – I Love You

Romance and Russia, the two words just go together. Unless, of course, you are trying to speak in Russian.

    Russian Language

The Russian language is not one that is typically considered a romance language. Based on the Cyrillic alphabet, there are a lot of stops and starts not to mention the occasional harsh noise. Given the fact that I was from California and thus could barely speak proper English, it was all the more a challenge.

    Russian Women

In that I was living in Russia for a year, it was inevitable I would pick up a Russian girlfriend. Hey, there had to be at least one crazy one in the city!

Russian women are much sought after for their beauty and grace. Indeed, 9 out of 10 desperate men prefer to order addresses from a Russian mail order bride web site versus all other nationalities. Okay, I made that up, but you get the idea.

In truth, I found Russian women to be all they are touted to be and excellent cooks. As a single male in Siberia sans microwave, the cooking part was critical. Due to the lack of Pepto in Siberia, poisoning oneself is not recommended.

Still, Russian women do suffer from one flaw inherent in all women. Upon finding a boyfriend lacking in certain areas, a Russian woman will endeavor to fix them. In my case, the improvement involved the Russian language and love.

Ya tyebya lyublyu! This is the Russian phrase for “I love you.” At no point in time could I pronounce it correctly. I could declare my love, but never in the right direction. Because of the nuances of the Russian language, my inability to profess my love would lead me to say the equivalent of:

    “I love tree”

    “I love door”

    “I love dog”

Of course, I could cuss like a local, but that was frowned upon by the girlfriend.

After months of aggravation, my girlfriend became determined to resolve this flaw in my moral character. Practice was the key and practice I did. Like that odd person in the bookstore, I mumbled “Ya tyebya lyublyu!” everywhere I went. This often led to random Russian women smiling at me and less enthusiastic Russian men giving me harsh looks. I won’t even mention what the occasional dog tried to do to my leg. Despite my efforts, my immortal soul could not be fixed. We gave up. Still, she had the determined look in her eyes, so I knew I wasn’t out of the woods yet.

One fine Siberian winter morning, which is to say it was -30 degrees, I was groggily greeted by an excited Tatyana. I was ordered to say “yellow blue bus.” I did. I was told to say it faster. I did. A yelp of triumph was heard across the permafrost of Siberia.

I had learned how to say “I love you” in Russian.

The door to which I had professed my love so many times went into depression.

Arizona Real Estate: The Valley of Dreams

A Strong Economy Makes Arizona a Popular Destination Spot

Phoenix is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation, and with good reason. Phoenix and the valley area has long been a popular destination for many visitors. Whether drawn to the area to take advantage of the soothing climate or because of the beautiful, natural resources, the central area of Arizona has steadily expanded. But in the last few years, that expansion has taken off at an exponential rate. So, what exactly is it that makes Arizona so popular?

In part, Phoenix and the surrounding community of Maricopa County, is perfectly situated to attract new residents.

There are a number of factors that contribute to this areas remarkable popularity:

Strong Job Market – Phoenix has matured into a major metropolitan area that features a number of high technology industries, such as semiconductors production, aerospace companies, information processing, and research and development centers. The thriving tourism industry also supports a growing employment base. Phoenix and the surround areas have a low unemployment rate of 4.2 percent. There are many great job opportunities in the area for residents and is understandably an attractive destination for those interested in relocating.

Low Crime Rate – One of the most interesting statistics about Phoenix is that even as the area expands at a phenomenal rate, the community’s crime rate just keeps dropping in all crime categories. In fact, in comparison to other cities of comparable sized, the greater Phoenix areas crime rates are significantly lower. The crime rate has steadily decreased over the last five years, as an example, robbery and assault rates have dropped 12 and 14 percent respectively.

Reasonable Tax Structure – In comparison to the other states, Arizona is one of the most attractive states for taxes. Arizona does have a state income tax, a fairly low sales tax, decreased property taxes (in comparison to other states with similar populations), and no estate tax. Arizona is especially attractive to retirees and is given an “A” grade for taxes, according to the Bloomberg LP report.

Educated Work Force – Phoenix, and the surrounding area, is rapidly earning a reputation for its highly capable and qualified work force. Statistically, this area boasts a higher percentage of educated employees than almost any other state (64.1 percent in Arizona as opposed to 54.9 percent nationally). Not only is the workforce extremely qualified, but Phoenix employees tend to have much higher work ethics and much lower absenteeism rates than almost any other metropolitan area in the country.

Areas of Interest – If you love a city with a great deal of entertainment opportunities, the central area of Arizona is perfect. There are a variety of professional sports teams, a number of superior museums, a symphony, wonderful golf courses, parks, and superior colleges and universities.

Whether you are looking for a community to relocate your family, to go to school in, or to retire in, there are few better states than Arizona. This area is rapidly growing. There are a number of excellent real estate values in the area. Even though the market for real estate is considered one of the “hottest” in the nation, prices are reasonable and the value of homes is steadily increasing. Central Arizona is welcoming to visitors and truly can be considered the Valley of Dreams.

High-Energy Laser Return Instant Deployment Mirror

In the future weapons of war for the human race will be that of high-energy lasers. This is good for many reasons. One of the best reasons is because environmentalists will not have to worry about all those discarded shells and debris left from firing weapons. This means the enemy cannot collect them and melt them down and make other weapons out of them.

Additionally the Green Peace Groupies ought to love it because the shells will not leach heavy metals into the enemy’s water supplies. But in all seriousness the future of Star Wars weapons will indeed change the face of warfare in the battlespace forever. And in doing so we will need better counter measures to prevent our enemy from taking out our expensive robotic hardware using high-energy lasers. How so you ask?

By making very tough materials, which can hold up against lasers for split seconds and then immediately put up a mirror of specially made ceramic, diamond or carbon nanotube sheets we can direct the enemies laser. Re-directing it onto him. Thus the golden rule does apply here in the modern battlespace; “Do not do onto the United States of America, what you would not want to have re-directed to you!” A thought provoking idea indeed and one everyone can come to learn to believe in too. Think on this in 2006.

New Zealand Vacation Attractions – The North Island

For many travellers on a New Zealand vacation, Auckland and the North Island are where their holiday begins. Here’s a look at some of the most popular sights and attractions in this part of the country:

Auckland: Auckland is an attractive, diverse city, and where most visitors begin their New Zealand vacation. The large Polynesian and Maori population gives it a South Pacific feel, although the population is over 1 million. There’s some really nice things for couples to do to. We enjoyed a great trip across the harbor to volcanic Rangitoto Island, and took a “tractor train” to the top for some nice views of the Hauraki Gulf.

We found some funky shops and cafes in Parnell Village and Ponsonby Street. Mixed with the locals at the weekend markets in Takapuna (some hot deals on clothes there too), and saw the wild coast out at Bethells Beach.

Auckland has it’s touristy things too like the Sky Tower and Kelly Tarlton’s Underwater World . And I’m sure you could also find a sheep shearing show around town pretty easily. But there is quite simply a nice feel to the place. Just wander down by the harbor, past where the America’s Cup Village was, and take the boat over to Devonport for tea on a pleasant, sunny afternoon. We just loved it.

Bay of Islands: Located near the semi-tropical top end of the North Island. Some of New Zealands best beaches are here. The desolate landscapes of 90 Mile Beach and Cape Reinga are amazing. Try make it up to the Cape Reinga lighthouse, and just spend a few minutes gazing out into the open Pacific crashing below! You’re at the top of New Zealand now…

Lake Rotorua: You’re in volcanic hot springs country here! The smell of sulphur will greet you as you approach. This popular tourist area is also New Zealand’s largest thermal area – you’ll actually see steam rising from the ground all over the place (even behind our motel!). Treat yourself to a dip in one of the thermal pools or mineral baths in the area. There’s also a nice cruise you can take on Lake Roturua in a paddle steamer, and in the evening various Maori cultural shows.

Taupo: Sportsmen come here for the world class trout fishing, we just love it for the beautiful countryside and nearby Huka Falls. If you’re quite active, you’ll find bungy jumping, tandem sky diving and canoeing/kayaking close by.

Wellington: The capital of New Zealand, which houses the parliament in a building known as the “beehive” (one look and you’ll know why!). Wellington’s café, eating and art scenes are really starting to catch on, despite the fact that it tends to get very windy here. It’s almost like a “mini-San Francisco” with homes perched on the sides of scenic steep hills overlooking the harbor.

A really romantic excursion is the cable car ride up to Kelburn, where you can relax at the restaurant which has excellent view of the city and the water. After, you can wind your way down by foot with a walk through the Botanic Gardens.
